Whats not to like?! The yellowed pages; the coffee stains on covers; dog-eared edges; broken spine; smell of owners past; stray hairs from pets of previous book owners; notes/receipts/various things previously used as book-marks left behind; names and notes scribbled on the inside of the front covers- all of these add so much to the whole being of a book..
My favourite history of a book has got to be when I was expecting a second hand copy of Wally Lamb’s “I know this much is true” I was warned by the sender to expect the copy to have a few wrinkled edges at the back of the book as she’d been unable to put it down once she’d started it and had to carry on reading it in the bath where she’d dropped it!
